We are a family run stud in the South end of Shetland, established in the 1960's. Our stud consists of mainly broken coloured ponies both standard and miniature. Together with my husband, son and daughter, we aim to breed quality ponies with good conformation, action, bone and temperament, true to island type.
My grandfather always had ponies and his ponies appear in the first studbook under the stud name of "Vatchley". The Robin's Brae stud, as we know it today, was founded by my father in the mid 1960's. The first three mares were bought at the Baltasound sale, on the island of Unst. One of them made history by producing twin piebald filly foals, named Pride and Joy. Both foals were retained by the stud and produced their first foals within 1 hour of each other - both of which were black fillies. Pride became a riding pony for my son and Joy gave many hours of pleasure to a lot of people, ending her days helping children with additional support needs, with her gentle nature. Pride and Joy were probably the main influence on the family's preference for broken coloured ponies and in particular, piebald ponies. This bloodline still lives on in our stud with our stallion Robin's Brae Ignite, who's breeding goes back to the twins.
Today our stud has evolved into two groups of ponies. One group focused on quality ponies of 38 - 41" using the best island and Marshwood bloodlines and another group of quality ponies under 34", that are mainly our own breeding from Mack of Knowe and Berry bloodlines.
Over the last 20 years we have done consistently well in the show ring - mainly the Cunningsburgh and Viking shows, where large classes are the norm, therefore every rosette is hard earned and a delight to take home.
All our ponies are friendly and well handled and visitors are always welcome. Please phone first to arrange a time, or contact us on the above details.
